DALLAS, April 28, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Comerica Bank, information management services firm Iron Mountain Incorporated and KDFW FOX 4 set another world record this weekend, earning a Guinness World Records® honor for "Most Paper Collected in a 24-Hour Period" at Shred Day DFW, a free community shredding event held at Comerica Bank's Mockingbird Service Center in Dallas on Saturday, April 26. The event, designed to raise awareness of identity theft protection and sustainability, resulted in the collection of 401,925 pounds of paper in a single day, which surpassed the previous record by more than 63 tons. All 401,925 pounds of paper collected at the event was securely destroyed by Iron Mountain and is being turned into pulp to make recycled paper goods and products.
"Each year at Shred Day DFW, we serve more and more North Texans by shredding their sensitive paper documents for free, increase the positive impact to the local environment and help collect more food and donations for the North Texas Food Bank, our non-profit beneficiary," said J. Patrick Faubion, Texas Market President for Comerica Bank. "Setting two world records within three years is a testament to the need and desire of North Texans to protect themselves from identity theft and to keep their sensitive documents out of local landfills. As the largest bank headquartered in Texas, we're proud to have hosted not only the largest single community shredding effort in Texas, but in the world."
An official adjudicator from Guinness World Records attended the event to observe the attempt, certify the results and present Comerica Bank, Iron Mountain and KDFW FOX 4 with the Guinness World Records certificate.
"Our customers know the important role secure shredding plays in protecting sensitive information, like social security numbers," said Ed Foley, Vice President and Territory General Manager for Iron Mountain. "Additionally, our customers are increasingly using secure shredding to help bolster their environmental sustainability goals through the recycling of their shredded paper. Those two benefits, security and sustainability, are available to consumers as well, and we're proud to be able to educate the community while taking part in such a cool record-breaking event."
In 2012, at the second annual Shred Day DFW event, Comerica Bank, Iron Mountain and KDFW FOX 4 earned their first Guinness World Records honor for collecting 111,920 pounds of paper documents. In September 2013, CBS Atlanta (WGCL-TV) and Recall claimed the world record honor for collecting 275,750 pounds of paper in a 24-hour period.
