DALLAS, April 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Comerica Bank and information management services firm Iron Mountain Incorporated set a world record this weekend, earning a Guinness World Records honor for "Most Paper Collected in a 24-Hour Period" at Shred Day DFW, a free community shredding event held at Comerica Bank's Mockingbird Service Center in Dallas on Saturday, April 14. The public event, designed to raise awareness of identity theft protection and sustainability, resulted in the collection of 111,920 pounds of paper in a single day, which surpassed the previous record (87,360 pounds, set in 2011) by more than 12 tons. All 111,920 pounds of paper collected is being securely destroyed and recycled by Iron Mountain.

"Our second annual Shred Day DFW far surpassed our goals in terms of reaching out to the community to raise awareness of identity theft protection and recycling," said J. Patrick Faubion, Texas Market President for Comerica Bank. "Not only did we help thousands of Dallas/Fort Worth residents securely destroy sensitive paper documents, we positively impacted the environment, collected food for our less fortunate neighbors and broke a world record in the process."
An official adjudicator from Guinness World Records attended the event to observe the attempt, certify the results and present Comerica Bank and Iron Mountain with the Guinness World Records certificate.
"Our business customers know the benefits of secure shredding in protecting their sensitive information," said Michael Gordon, Vice President of Operations for Iron Mountain. "Shredding paper records, especially those that contain personal information like social security numbers, can help prevent identity theft for businesses and consumers alike. We're thrilled that we could participate in such a cool record-breaking event, educate our community on these benefits and also help the environment."
As a new charitable component to this year's Shred Day event, participants were encouraged to bring a suggested donation of two nonperishable food items to help support the North Texas Food Bank. As a result, the event generated approximately 4,546 pounds of food and monetary donations equivalent to roughly 13,588 meals that will help feed hungry families, seniors and children in 13 North Texas counties.
KDFW FOX 4 Dallas and CBS Radio Dallas served as official media partners of Shred Day DFW.
