“Financial literacy is one of several keys to closing the undeniable racial wealth gap, said Rev. Horace Sheffield, III, executive director, The Detroit Association of Black Organizations. “When you don’t know better, you cannot do better. Many simply aren't educated about finances. So we’re happy to partner with Comerica Bank to teach financial literacy to an underserved community.”

The financial empowerment series furthers Comerica’s support and commitment to DABO built on a lengthy partnership that dates back more than 40 years to DABO’s founding in 1979.

Most recently, Comerica Bank and the Comerica Charitable Foundation provided $30,000 in funding to provide COVID-19 relief last year.

In 2020, DABO formed a network of partners, including Comerica Bank, to help battle and thwart the highly contagious and deadly coronavirus through free testing.

Free COVID-19 testing at DABO’s Sheffield Center (12048 Grand River), first launched at the end of April, has continued over the past 11 months. Now, testing takes place on the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m.-Noon, with the next four dates including: March 13, April 10, May 8, June 12.

Additionally, free testing also talks place every fourth Saturday at Greater Grace Temple (23500 W. Seven Mile Road).

Food security has remained a focus for DABO during the COVID-19 pandemic as well. Thus far, DABO has provided approximately 119,000 meals to families since April 2020.

Since 1979, the Detroit Association of Black Organizations (DABO) has uplifted, unified, and empowered Detroit’s African American community through various programs, initiatives, and events. DABO is a federation of over 130 black, and non–black organizations working to build community unity.

DABO's Mackenzie Noble Community Collaborative Drug Free Coalition is an initiative funded by Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network. The coalition is designed to engage the Detroit community to tackle underage drinking and drug use.
